Heat pumps in London, Ontario

One system that heats and cools. I will tell you plainly whether it suits your house and your bills, or whether you are better off not bothering.

What a heat pump actually does here

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run backwards. In summer it takes heat out of the house, in winter it takes heat out of the outdoor air and brings it in. That sounds like a trick in February, and it is the part people struggle with, so here is the honest version for this climate.

London gets down into the minus twenties on roughly four nights a year, usually in January or February. The rest of the heating season sits well above that. A modern cold climate heat pump handles the great majority of those hours perfectly well, and the gas furnace only has to carry the handful of genuinely cold nights. That pairing is called a hybrid or dual fuel system, and for a house that already has gas it is usually the sensible answer rather than ripping the furnace out.

Where a heat pump makes real sense

Where I will tell you not to bother

If you have a fairly new high efficiency gas furnace, a working air conditioner, and cheap natural gas, a heat pump is not going to pay you back any time soon. I would rather say that on the phone than sell you one and have you work it out later.

On rebates. The two programmes everybody still has on their website, Enbridge HER+ and the Canada Greener Homes Grant, are both closed. The one that is live is the Home Renovation Savings programme run by Save on Energy with Enbridge Gas, which advertises up to $12,000 on heat pumps. Terms change, so I will check what actually applies to your house and your equipment before you order anything, rather than quoting you a number off a poster.

Sizing, and why it matters more here than anywhere

An oversized heat pump is worse than an oversized furnace. It short cycles, it never settles into the efficient part of its range, and it is noisier. I would rather spend twenty minutes working out what your house actually needs than sell you the biggest one on the list.

Questions I get asked

Do heat pumps work in a London winter?

Yes, for most of it. We only get down into the minus twenties about four nights a year here. A cold climate heat pump covers the bulk of the season and a gas furnace covers the extremes, which is why the hybrid setup is what I fit most often.

Will I have to get rid of my furnace?

No. In a hybrid system the furnace stays and takes over when it is genuinely cold. If your furnace is fairly new that is usually the best value option on the table.

What rebates can I get?

The live programme is Home Renovation Savings from Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas, which advertises up to $12,000 on heat pumps. HER+ and the Greener Homes Grant are both closed, whatever other websites still say. I will confirm what applies before you order anything.

Can I have one if I have no ducts?

Yes. A ductless heat pump puts a head in each room that matters. It suits the older houses around Old North and Old South that were built for radiators.
